Yep, I’m going there, I’m gonna drop a Day trip post during international travel lockdown. With the regions reopening internal travel, me and my gf went on a trip out of Florence, cause the 4 walls surrounding us we’re getting a bit tight, and we needed some nature. That’s when we decided to go to Pienza.

The first thing I’m going to say is that you’ll need to rent a car to get there. If you need a hand on some of the best places to rent a car we’ve got the right post for you in our Car rental Italy Complete list.

Getting to Pienza, Italy

Getting to Pienza from Florence takes about an hour and a half depending on traffic. But the drive is worth it. As you can see from the picture above you’ll find yourself in some amazing scenery. The first part of the drive is mostly highway, so you don’t have to freak out about the curvy country roads that much.

Val d'orcia

This is one of the last things you’ll see before getting to the small hill town of Pienza, Tuscany. From what I read it’s a historical Palazzo called Palazzo Massaini where you can buy oil and wine. It looks a lot better live.

Pienza was home to Pope Pius II, that made the city what it is today, by hiring Renaissance architect Bernardo Rossellino. It’s thanks to the work done by Bernando Rossellino that Pienza is as beautiful as it is.

Pienza Cheese

The town being on the highest point overlooks the Val d’Orcia (that deserves a post all to itself, I mean even Mick Jagger is thinking about moving there). The Valley that gives us Montepulciano wine, and some of the best sceneries in Tuscany.

Right beneath the town, you can also find a little Pieve that was built in the 11th century. It’s really nice, but there’s a crypt downstairs that you can visit for free. The lights go off if you don’t move around, so don’t freak like I did down there.

Finally, the thing that really put Pienza on the map is Pienza cheese. So, whatever you do, grab yourself a little slice somewhere and buy some to bring home.
