Picture this: a woman with her laptop and a glass of wine, while words quickly start showing on the screen. The sound of her typing is quite satisfying – there’s something about it that makes you think she’s confident and focused. She sips some wine and goes back to typing.

This may be the intro to any Sex and The City episode, but could also be a description of any content creator doing their job (maybe not for the wine part but, well… you got the idea). That said, the woman in the picture is me, a 29 year old Brazilian, currently living in Italy. As I am writing this post for you, in fact, I am in Florence, one of the most beautiful cities of art in the Italian peninsula. Last month I moved to Florence to create content for a local agency, and now I’m about to share some of those experiences with you!

What is a content creator?

A content creator is a person responsible for creating content. I know this may seem obvious, but the real question should be: What exactly is content?

Brands, businesses, and personalities need to build their presence online, and the only way to do that is by creating and sharing valuable content: social media posts, videos, blog posts, and newsletters. 

Through content you can build awareness, authority, and a strong community. The community built around a brand evolves from mere followers to customers to loyal customers.

It’s crucial not to take this for granted. Creating content isn’t just about writing text or taking pictures – it takes strategy, consistency, and hard work!

Social media manager vs content creator

Even though they might seem the same thing, they are not. While the content creator focuses on the content itself, the social media manager creates the strategy to ensure consistent company branding. The social media manager manages ads, builds relationships, and, among other things, manages the community by responding to comments and private messages. However, it is not uncommon for both roles to be performed by the same person. Just to give you a comparison: if media were a newspaper, the content creator would be the journalist and the social media manager, the editor.

Content Creators vs Influencers: methods and similarities

The differences between the content creator and influencer denominations are at the center of a heated debate. YouTube had quite a lot to do with the popularity of the term creator, as it would refer to its users who were creating and uploading videos on the platform. These videos were reaching thousands and thousands of people, and the use of the name creator was sort of a corporate maneuver to help distribute and monetize the videos.

Nowadays, the term creator has evolved and is not only related to YouTube’s power users: it also refers to those people who can edit, write, produce and manage communities on different platforms such as Instagram, Pinterest, or even TikTok.

On the other hand, those who earned an online audience based on their personality and lifestyle or via viral content are called “influencers”. Also, the name influencer is related to marketing and those users who have strong ties with different brands. Some believe that the word influencer evolved from fashion bloggers at the rise of platforms like Instagram and the subsequent fall of fashion blogs.

There is a thin line between both words and even a gender debate: men would like to be called creators, while most women would be called influencers. Personally, I do agree with that. Do you?

My personal experience

Being a content creator abroad is mind-opening. As a foreign person, coming from a different background and a different culture can give you a completely different perspective on most things. That can be appealing to the audience that might identify with that point of view. Also, being somewhere different from home gives you a touch of curiosity and enchantment that sometimes is lost when you are in your own country. As the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson said once, “it’s easy to wonder in a different country: at home, we either know too much about it or know nothing at all”.
