Christmas 2017 in Florence
Many students and expats will be spending the holiday season in Florence this year. Tuscany is beautiful all year round, but Christmas is a wonderful time to experience a very magical time in Florence! There are many ways for students, families and tourists to enjoy Florence at Christmas. Here are some of the wonderful things the city has to offer over the next few weeks:
Christmas Markets are popping up in many piazzas in Florence. The biggest and best of them being the market in Santa Croce. Get some mulled wine and cider to keep you warm while you browse the stalls filled with hand-made ornaments and toys, and yummy food delights like warm apple strudel. A great place to get a feel for a real Tuscan Christmas market!
The Nutcracker Ballet is a Christmas tradition all over the world, and Florence is no exception. The St. Petersburg ballet company presents this timeless classic on December 23 at the beautiful Teatro Della Pergola (via Della Pergola, 12/32, Florence). The shows are at 5:45 & 8:45pm and tickets can be found online https://www.boxofficetoscana.it/ A classic activity for students, expats and local families to enjoy.
Look up at night and enjoy one of the most beautiful parts about holiday time in Florence; lights are hung above almost every street in the centro, with different shapes and colours around every corner. Parts of Florence are illuminated all month long until January 8th as well during the F-Light Firenze Light Festival. The city becomes a canvas for artistic and educational light images projected onto the sides of buildings, churches, bridges and walls. And don’t forget the magnificent Christmas trees in Piazza di Republica and the Duomo.
Last but not least, this is a great time to visit all the museums and churches in Florence without having to battle your way through the tourists. Many remain open or have special hours -check the websites before you go. Have a magical Christmas season here in Florence and make it one you will never forget!
